Meisje Van Metaal

She began working with metal during product design studies, where it was primarily used as a construction material: powerful and usually hidden beneath a finish. In her work, she removes the metal from this supporting and hidden role. She gives the material its deserved voice back by transforming its strength into an unexpectedly soft and dynamic image.

Meisje van Metaal traded a canvas for steel plates and a brush for an angle grinder. Because she can't work in layers as is possible with paint, she seeks rhythm and repetition to create depth and movement. The image sometimes emerges from a few grinding marks, sometimes from many. This method leads to a constant interplay between control and letting go, something that, in her view, also characterizes everyday life, in which both forces continually pose a challenge.
